In today’s world where smartphones and telecommuting keep many employees perpetually tethered to their offices, the 9-to-5 workday that inspired the 1980 movie, and later the Broadway musical comedy of the same name, seems like a relic of a bygone corporate era.

Boorish bosses, however, are timeless,  which is what makes the Raven Players’ toe-tapping production of  “9 to 5: The Musical” as much fun to experience today as it was three decades ago when Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin hilariously turned the tables on their overbearing employer. The Broadway musical inspired by the movie now comes to Robbinsville in a lively student production that opens for the first of three shows on Friday, April 12.

“This is a show where you just want to get up and dance,” promises senior Marisa Jean Giachetti, who has the role of office newcomer Judy Bernly. “Really, it’s that much fun.”

The other two actresses in the show’s female triumvirate are junior Natalia Maccaroni, who plays Doralee Rhodes, the attractive secretary constantly rebuffing her boss’ unwanted attention; and junior Chelsea Sardoni, who plays Violet Newstead, the competent office manager repeatedly passed over for promotions that go to less-qualified men. Eleventh-grader Holden Bihl plays the egotistical and manipulative boss, Franklin Hart, who demeans and harasses the three women until, pushed to their breaking point, they concoct a hilarious scheme to exact revenge.

However, this play is more than just an estrogen rush. The humorous predicaments that beset the three main characters as they fight for respect in the workplace will appeal to both men and women, Sardoni points says, adding the show has a “Saturday Night Live” vibe to it.

“There’s a lot of action and it’s funny,” Sardoni said. “At one point one of the characters is going to be strung up to a garage door and will be flying in mid-air.”

The songs, written for the 2009 Broadway musical by country music singer Dolly Parton, are much more contemporary than the 1970s subject matter and will make the audience want to dance along with the cast, the students said.

The production, directed by RHS vocal music teacher David Westawski and choreographed by assistant director Rebekah Territo, runs April 12, 13, and 14 at the 1,000-seat Robbinsville High School Performing Arts Center. Showtime is 7:30 p.m. for the Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13  performances and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets will be sold at the door and cost $12 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can also be reserved in advance for pickup at the box office on the day of the performance by calling 609-632-0950 extension 3111.
