The children of the MOMS Club of Robbinsville recently put their little legs into action and walked the one mile circuit around the Town Center Lake to earn food for the Robbinsville Food Pantry.

The second annual Hungry As A Bear Walk on May 3 helped the children understand the concepts of charity and sponsorship, while teaching them that anyone who cares can make a difference in their community, organizers said.

The walkers, age 19 months to age 6, learned this lesson firsthand by collecting food sponsors from family and friends and delivering fliers throughout their neighborhoods asking for food donations in the weeks prior to the walk.

“The kids got a real kick out of collecting the food and seeing their piles grow knowing they were helping local people,” said Club President Rachel Steinberg.

The kids’ efforts amassed nine boxes and 11 bags of nonperishable food items, which were given to Renee Burns, director of the Robbinsville Senior Center where the township’s food pantry for the poor is housed.

The MOMS Club of Robbinsville is composed of stay-at-home or part-time working mothers who are looking for opportunities to make friends, share experiences in raising children and have fun. The club places an emphasis on giving back to the community and teaching children to help others.

In addition to the Robbinsville Food Pantry, the MOMS Club also regularly donates to Woman Space, Toys For Tots, and HomeFront.

Anyone who missed the opportunity to donate food for the Hungry As A Bear Walk can still bring a donation directly to the food pantry. For information on food pantry hours, call 609-259-1567 or email Burns at ReneeB@Robbinsville-Twp.org.
