Mayor Dave Fried has made it official by formally announcing he is running for a third term in office on Nov. 5.

Fried told residents of his decision ahead of the Sept. 3 filing deadline in a letter mailed by his campaign to all Robbinsville households on June 14. In his letter,  Fried said he and his administration had accomplished a lot, particularly in the area of economic development, but he was seeking another four-year term because “my work in Robbinsville is not nearly complete.”

“I simply cannot leave this office with so many goals left unrealized or still in the planning stages,” Fried wrote. “The completion of Town Center South, finding a permanent home for our municipal building, getting the Keep it Local Robbinsville initiative running at full speed and landing an all-important anchor tenant for the Foxmoor Shopping Center are things we need to accomplish.”

Fried, a Republican, has held public office in Robbinsville for 13 years. He was a member of the Township Committee for five years and then became the municipality’s first directly elected mayor in 2005 when the township changed its form of government. Fried was re-elected mayor in 2009 and has made economic development and attracting new ratables priorities in his second term.

In his letter to residents, Fried noted his administration’s success bringing internet commerce giant Amazon and other Fortune 500 companies to Robbinsville. New tax incentive programs authorizing Payments in Lieu of Taxes, or PILOTs, were instrumental in attracting Amazon and pharmaceutical company McKesson to the  176-acre redevelopment zone within the 434-acre Matrix Business Park, he said.

The 1-million-square-foot Amazon fulfillment center near Old York Road, which is expected to open next year, will bring 1,400 jobs and $20 million in PILOT revenue to the township over the next 20 years, Fried said.

Robbinsville’s elections are nonpartisan, meaning municipal candidates are not chosen in June primaries by their respective political parties. Instead, prospective candidates must secure 84 signatures of registered township voters on candidate nominating petitions and file the paperwork with the municipal clerk by 4 p.m., Sept. 3 in order to have their names appear on the Nov. 5 General Election ballot.

Councilman David Boyne, who won a special election in November to fill a vacancy on the Township Council, confirmed June 19 that he has picked up a candidate packet for the mayor’s race, but has not made a final decision on whether he will challenge the incumbent mayor in November.

In addition to the mayor, the two Township Council seats held by Council Vice President Vince Calcagno and Councilwoman Sheree McGowan are also on the ballot Nov. 5. Former Councilman Dennis Shennard said June 19 he has picked up a candidate packet from the clerk and may throw his political hat in the ring, potentially making it a contested three-way council race.

“I’m considering it,” Shennard said. “I wouldn’t be running against any one person specifically, but there are two seats available and I am considering running for one of those two seats.”
