Detours ahead due to Old Trenton Road bridge project

A bridge replacement project on Old Trenton Road is scheduled to begin July 15.

Motorists who regularly travel Old Trenton Road will have to put up with a circuitous detour for five months due to a $2.1 million project that includes replacing the 86-year-old concrete bridge over the Assunpink Creek.

The construction project is expected to begin July 15 and be completed by Nov. 27, weather permitting. Old Trenton Road (Route 535) will be closed between Robbinsville-Edinburg Road (Route 526) and Edinburg-Windsor Road (Route 641) while the work is being done, but when the project is finished the improvements will help alleviate the bottlenecks that often occur at this these intersections.

The bridge on Old Trenton Road, which dates to 1927, will be replaced with a wider structure able to accommodate three 11-foot lanes, including one left-turning lane, two 6-foot wide shoulders, a 6-foot wide sidewalk along the north side of the bridge, as well as cast-in-place concrete parapets.

For the first time, a traffic light will be installed at Robbinsville-Edinburg Road, where it meets Old Trenton Road, just over the township border in West Windsor.

“The new signal is needed to alleviate congestion and accommodate a turning lane, which also is the reason for the upgrade to the existing signal on the other side of the bridge,” Mercer County spokesman Michael Boonin said.

The existing traffic signal being replaced on the northern side of the bridge is located at the intersection of Old Trenton Road and Edinburg-Windsor Road. A dozen utility poles and a water main will need to be relocated because of the project.

During construction, Old Trenton Road traffic will be detoured to Robbinsville-Edinburg Road into Robbinsville, then to Route 33, then to Route 130 North, then to Church Street, which turns into Edinburg-Windsor Road, then to Old Trenton Road.

The county contract has been awarded to Lucas Construction Group Inc., of Morganville, whose bid was the lowest of six companies that vied for the project.
