Although the spotlight was on K9 Valko during the recent police recognition ceremony, seven other awards were given to officers for outstanding police work and three residents received citizen awards for helping police solve recent crimes.

Township residents Deborah and David Floyd were honored for providing the tip that led police to the car that struck and killed pedestrian William Paskewicz on Robbinsville-Allentown Road on Jan. 27. The Floyds, who read media accounts of the hit-and-run vehicle’s description, saw a pickup truck with heavy front end damage parked on a township driveway and reported its location to police, leading to the arrest of the driver within 48 hours of the crime, Police Chief Martin Masseroni said.

“Because of (the Floyds’) dedication to community and attention to detail, the Police Department was able to make an arrest and bring closure to Bill Paskewicz’s family,” Masseroni said as he presented the couple with a 2013 Citizen Award.

Another resident, Mark Walsh, who was unable to attend the June 27 ceremony, was also honored with a 2013 Citizen Award because the 911 call he made about a suspicious person entering a neighbor’s home on Eastbridge Drive stopped a burglary in progress on May 2. The suspect later gave detectives the name of her accomplice and confessed to other unsolved break-ins in the area, Masseroni said.

“One simple phone call resulted in solving seven burglaries, thousands of dollars worth of jewelry being returned to a victim, and getting a bad person off the street,” Masseroni said.

A group of police officers were also honored for superb police work over the past two years, including the Police Department’s 2012 Officer of the Year, Adrian Markowski, whom Masseroni called a “consummate professional.”

“I’m proud for him, I’m proud of him, and this is well-deserved in recognition of his dedicated professionalism, but also his friendly manner, expertise and reliability to the people of Robbinsville,” Masseroni said.

Other police awards included:

  • 2011 Honorable Service Award to Patrolman Shawn Emmons who saw a strong-armed robbery taking place at the 7-Eleven on Route 33 in Hamilton Township and made an arrest after a foot pursuit.
  • 2011 Honorable Service Award to Patrolman Shawn Bruton for a motor vehicle stop that recovered narcotics and a defaced handgun.
